I still have that watch in my collection but even then I was eyeing another model. In the beginning of this year I spotted a gold plated example on eBay, which was serviced and in fairly good shape according to the seller and the photos he provided. It just so happened that while I was waiting for delivery of this model a much rarer version was listed on my own turf, German eBay. With a bit of luck I managed to close the deal on this model for almost exactly the same price as the gold plated version. This however was stainless steel in excellent condition with a crispy case where original polishing is still clearly visible. He agreed and the Fratello family gained 2 Angelus Chronodato watches at once; one in gold plated and one in stainless steel. So much so, in fact, that the line was in production for roughly 10 years. It was produced in stainless steel, gold plated and solid gold versions with different dial variations.
The Ocean combined the non-rusting Titanium with a level of style and technical sophistication that appealed to many. Designed by Ferdinand A Porsche, yes the same person who designed the iconic Porsche , the IWC Ocean starts apart from the utilitarian designs of the time. Consider that the watch was water resistant to feet, the same as the Omega Seamaster Professional divers watch. This Ocean features a 3 piece titanium case with screw down case back. The titanium unidirectional bezel, features a serrated profile instead of marked minute markers.

Another British Military watch on the blog this time, and something of an enigma. The watch is very similar in style and size to the W10 made by Hamilton from and subsequently by CWC from and it shares all of the attributes required to adhere to the strict standards for military use. The case is opened by removing the crystal and splitting the two-piece stem, and inside is a 17 jewel, manually wound calibre made by A. It has a higher beat rate, 28, bph as opposed to 21, bph, and also has a micro-adjustment mechanism mounted on the balance cock for more accurate regulation.
Here is a picture of a cal. In the picture above, the stem is pushed all the way in — in the winding position — and so the stem presses on hacking lever, it pivots around the fixed axis just above the castle wheel and the lower arm of the lever releases the balance allowing it to rotate freely.
Case serial number The Online Database for the Elgin Watch Company can tell you a great deal of information about your watch, based on just the serial number off the movement. This watch is referred to as a pre-Comex because it is not as recognizable as the later model , on which the dial is signed COMEX. Comex watches were outfitted with helium release valves, so this can properly be considered both a Submariner and a Sea-Dweller. These legendary and highly collectable watches pioneered the technology that we are accustomed to today, namely indestructible purpose-built tool watches for the professional diver for whom the regular Submariner was not sufficient.
What Comex watches have in common, and make them different from all other Rolex watches, is that they were never sold through Rolex retailers. Instead, the watches were bought by the company Comex for their divers and issued to them. When the divers departed the company, they were free to take their watches. It is believed that no more than of these pre-Comex watches were made. No one knows how many survive to this day, but they are rare to be sure.

It is a small selection of often unidentified old movements that I have been able to positively identify. I don’t intend to show movements with their makers names on them, because they are already identified. The idea of this page is to try to identify otherwise unknown movements found in the type of watches that I collect, which are principally Great War era men’s wristwatches with 12 or 13 ligne movements.
They first appear in the IWC movement and parts catalogue “Fournitures No. 1” dating from around These calibres use the same basic shapes for the plates and the escape and balance cocks, but laid out differently in the Lépine and Savonnette styles.

The image in Jobin shows a basic grade of this movement with no train jewels but with “Bouchons” “dessus” and “dessous” above and below , that is brass bushes instead of jewels in the top and bottom plates. The RolCo movement is fully jewelled with 15 jewels.
Watches with Rolex’s “other brands” on their movements such as Marconi, Unicorn or RolCo, are often described as “Rolex watches”, but this is not what Rolex would have called them.

A Hamilton US military “general purpose” watch from In keeping with similar watches of this type, the dial bears the “H3” mark which I think signifies the use of Tritium in the luminescent compound and the Radiation tri-foil symbol. The back of the watch bears the relevant military specification, part number and date information, together with the instruction that it should be disposed of as “radiation waste”.
This watch has an interesting life story! As I understand it, it was procured, along with many other watches, by the British MoD in the ‘s and was evaluated at Herstmonceux Castle at that time owned by the Admiralty for potential military use. In the 70’s, the watches used in the evaluation were sold and became part of a private collection. Ownership was then transferred to the author of a well-known book on military timepieces who, in , sold the watch on to another collector.
Later, the watch briefly appeared on eBay, but the buyer returned it to the seller as he thought it was too small for him, thus enabling me to acquire it instead: In the ‘s the British Ministry of Defence produced a standard specification for watches to be issued to the armed forces. This Longines also sometimes referred to as the “Greenlander” as it was supposedly used by members of the British North Greenland Expedition between and dates to although it appears to have had what I suspect is an MOD redial at a later date.

Joji Morishita, Tokyo’s commissioner to the global conservation body, responded late Friday telling reporters that the country would answer the queries from the IWC but its intentions would not be altered. The International Whaling Commission IWC on Friday demanded that Japan provide more information to prove that its revised Antarctic whaling programme was for scientific research “There has been no change to our plan,” Morishita said. He added Japan would “conduct additional analyses” to gain more support for the new programme, Kyodo News said.
Regardless of the ruling by IWC, Japan can still press ahead with the “lethal sampling” hunt in the Southern Ocean, scheduled to begin in December, as it is ultimately up to individual countries to issue permits for whaling on scientific grounds.
