November 16, By Danielle St. Louis Americans drink million cups of coffee a day. Where does all of that coffee come from? But environmental changes could harm Brazil’s coffee plants. Coffee crops are incredibly sensitive to temperature changes. Increasing temperatures world-wide could make it difficult to grow coffee in Brazil. Farmers have tried to lower the temperature for coffee plants by intercropping them with shade trees. The trees provided too much shade and competed with the coffee plants for nutrients. Researchers needed to find the right type of shade tree to make intercropping work.
A DNA “picture” features columns of dark-colored parallel bands and is equivalent to a fingerprint lifted from a smooth surface. Let’s consider the former situation — when a suspect is present. Then they compare that profile to a profile of DNA taken from the crime scene. There are three possible results: Inclusions — If the suspect’s DNA profile matches the profile of DNA taken from the crime scene, then the results are considered an inclusion or nonexclusion.
In other words, the suspect is included cannot be excluded as a possible source of the DNA found in the sample.

See Article History Human digestive system, the system used in the human body for the process of digestion. The human digestive system consists primarily of the digestive tract , or the series of structures and organs through which food and liquids pass during their processing into forms absorbable into the bloodstream. The system also consists of the structures through which wastes pass in the process of elimination and other organs that contribute juices necessary for the digestive process.
The human digestive system as seen from the front. Structures and functions of the human digestive system The digestive tract begins at the lips and ends at the anus. Glands contributing digestive juices include the salivary glands , the gastric glands in the stomach lining, the pancreas , and the liver and its adjuncts—the gallbladder and bile ducts.
All of these organs and glands contribute to the physical and chemical breaking down of ingested food and to the eventual elimination of nondigestible wastes. Their structures and functions are described step by step in this section. The abdominal organs are supported and protected by the bones of the pelvis and ribcage and are covered by the greater omentum, a fold of peritoneum that consists mainly of fat. Mouth and oral structures Little digestion of food actually takes place in the mouth.
But the maned wolf is neither fox nor wolf. It is a distinct species in the Canidae family. The wolves live in a vast tropical savanna in South America called the Cerrado , which boasts extraordinary diversity of plants and animals. But that habitat is disappearing due to rapid expansion of agriculture.

Here, a group of researchers tested this hypothesis by determining whether chickens have any innate preferences for certain human faces. To do so, they trained chickens to react to either an average human male or female face. They then showed the chickens a series of faces of different levels of attractiveness see Figure 1 below and measured how much the chickens pecked at each face a measure of their preference for the face.
Surprisingly, they found that the chickens preferred the same faces as did human volunteers in this case university students asked to rate the faces for attractiveness , suggesting that something about these faces makes them inherently more attractive to our nervous systems. So there you have it: Chickens prefer beautiful humans. In a subsequent test, the animals showed preferences for faces consistent with human sexual preferences obtained from university students.

Abstract In this paper we define the notions of agent matchmaking and brokering behaviors that are used while processing requests among initially unacquainted sets of agents.
These behaviors are basic components of common organizational roles and thus must be understood by computational agents. Brokering and matchmaking behaviors can be used to construct organizational forms such as centralized or distributed markets, ad hoc teams, and bureaucratic functional or product hierarchies. Each behavior brings with it certain performance characteristics — cost, robustness, and adaptiveness qualities — that are related to characteristics of the external environment and of the agents themselves.
For example, while brokered systems are more vulnerable to certain failures, they are also able to cope more quickly with a rapidly fluctuating agent workforce. We present several agent design constraints and related models, which are experimentally validated using the WARREN multi-agent portfolio management system.
Other researchers greet the findings with caution. June 03, By Melissa Healy, Los Angeles Times For more than a decade, the online dating site eHarmony has pitched itself as a company that matches singles with romantic partners who are looking for lifelong relationships. Now a study funded by the Santa Monica-based firm offers scientific evidence that husbands and wives who met online are more satisfied with their marriages than couples that met the old-fashioned way.
In a nationally representative survey of 19, people, researchers found slightly less marital contentment and slightly higher separation rates among people who met their spouse at work, on a blind date, in a bar or at a club.

Zeng Yuli is a freelance writer focusing on Chinese youth culture. It refers to single men and women who, having been introduced by a third party, get to know one another to decide if they are romantically compatible. In ancient China, matchmaking was an essential ritual. The wishes of individuals often played second fiddle to family concerns.
While attitudes toward love and marriage have become freer since the early 20th century, matchmaking has continued to exist to this day. Matchmaking is, of course, not exclusive to China: It has existed in different forms all across the globe. In 16th-century Europe, imperial families would choose their marital partners with the aid of portraits.
And how many of us today use online dating, watch matchmaking TV shows , or attend speed-dating events? That said, nowhere else in the world does matchmaking quite like China. The older generation still aims to help their children find life partners. Matchmaking not only concerns Chinese young people, but also makes parents feel anxious. Such a phenomenon is unlikely to occur in developed Western nations, where the elderly tend to spend retirement in a more leisurely manner, instead of interfering in the personal affairs of their children.
Wedekind, several studies found corroborating evidence for biological compatibility. They discovered that as the proportion of HLA-similar alleles increased between couples, females reported being less sexually responsive to their partners, less satisfaction from being aroused by their partners, and having additional sexual partners while with their current partner. Additionally, Ober et al. They discovered that married couples were less likely to share HLA alleles than expected from random chance; thus their results were consistent with tendencies for same-HLA alleled partners to avoid mating.
Further evidence of the importance of genetic compatibility can be found in the finding that couples sharing a higher proportion of HLA alleles tend to have recurring spontaneous abortions, reduced body mass in babies, and longer intervals between successive births. The wider variety of antigens allows the immune system to target a greater number of pathogens making the offspring more immunocompetent.

Nikhilesh Chawla, Professor, Fulton Schools of Engineering, began with a personal story about how a random conversation in a hallway led to a successful collaboration on a MURI application. He recommended networking at conferences and professional meetings. He also drove home the point that pursuing the more well known collaborator is enticing, it is wise to collaborate with someone who complements your strengths and your team.
Sometimes, a single handshake is enough to create a life-long partnership. He also mentioned Arizona Technology Enterpris e AzTE for those interested in pursuing commercialization of research efforts with industry partners. Stephen Feinson, Vice President of Global, described how his office is connecting with small and large companies to pursue funding opportunities internationally. This requires that he work with several faculty members at a time, protecting their interests, and advance the goals of ASU within a framework that ensures fruitful collaboration with industry partners.
His work focuses on identifying faculty members that work well within a team to accomplish specific goals that have been clearly defined by the sponsor agency.
